Adelaide, the "City of Churches", population 1.3 million and situated on the
Torrens River,
is the capital of South Australia.
Founded in 1836 as a planned city for free British settlers, followed closely
in 1838 by German settlers
who brought with them vine cuttings to launch the
famous wine industry, centered on the Barossa Valley.
Birthplace of Howard Florey (discoverer of penicillin) and the first state in
the world with full universal suffrage
(all could vote and all could stand for
parliament - 1895).
A city with beautiful patrolled ocean beaches, all sports, the Adelaide
Festival, the "Tour down Under",
Adelaide Oval, museums, art galleries, music,
festivals, great wine and dining, shopping, wine growing,
wonderful Georgian
North Terrace, parklands surrounding the city "Square Mile",
famous
thoroughbred studs and home of the Royal Adelaide Hospital
- one of the great
hospitals of the world.
